Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a third generation system used to perform various skin treatments for therapeutic purposes including: Hair removal, Skin Rejuvenation, Acne, Rosacea, Thread Veins, Wrinkle Reduction and Skin Pigmentation. The technology uses a high powered, handheld, computer controlled flash applicator to deliver an intense, visible, broad-spectrum pulse of light. Various filters can be used to selectively filter out shorter wavelengths to suit each treatment performed.

About Rosacea

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin disorder that mainly effects the face. Symptoms include facial redness, a burning sensation and inflamed pustule. It is common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men.

It is not known what causes rosacea, but some triggers can make symptoms worse. Common triggers for rosacea include:

  • Alcohol
  • Spicy Food
  • Cheese
  • Caffeine
  • Hot Drinks
  • Aerobic Exercise like Running

How It Works?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a safe and effective treatment of Rosacea. It is a non-invasive laser that produces short pulses of light energy which is absorbed by the blood in the vessels. A heat reaction is caused, which coagulates the blood and destroys the protein in the wall of the vessel. This procedure removes facial superficial vessels and as a result encourages the body to reabsorb them, improving the appearance and reducing redness.  IPL offers a gentle, long lasting solution for those suffering from Rosacea by providing a gradual and natural improvement to the skins appearance.

Not only this but the light heats the collagen fibres in the skin stimulating a production of new collagen and collagen remodelling, which in turn, improves the support of small vessels. This therefore helps to delay the development of more thread veins and inflammation, improving the skins elasticity, texture and can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Procedure time

Anywhere between 5-10 minutes depending on the area.

Pain

The sensation will vary from client to client. Treatment areas on the cheeks maybe more sensitive. It is described as a heat sensation and a few clients say it is like mild sunburn.

Recovery Time

Little downtime providing there is no persistent redness, blistering, or crusting present in the treatment area you may reassume all normal activities.

Side Affects

You may experience some redness, heat or swelling in the area that has been treated immediately after IPL treatment. Especially delicate areas such as cheeks can be red for up to 48 hours. There is a small chance a blister may form and there could by temporary lighting or darkening of the skin.

Sessions needed

Treatment to be be carried out once every 3/4 weeks and a course of 4-6 treatments for maximum results. Improvement may continue for many weeks after the course has finished. Rosacea is a relapsing condition and this treatment improves the appearance but does not cure rosacea.

Note

If you are using Retin A, Glycolic Acid or Roaccutane you will need to stop usually 6 months prior to the treatment.
